Purpose

This programme aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of radiation interactions, detection, and safety within nuclear energy facilities. Students will learn the principles of radiation types, energy loss mechanisms, radiation damage, detector operation, signal processing, data acquisition, and basic radiation biology. The program emphasizes safe practices, regulatory compliance, and dose minimization, including ALARA principles, shielding, and criticality considerations. Students develop critical cross-field competencies such as problem-solving, self-organization, effective communication, application of scientific and technological principles, and responsible citizenship. The outcomes ensure graduates can identify hazards, implement safety measures, and apply theoretical knowledge to real-world radiation protection challenges effectively.

Admission Requirements

Applicants require at least a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). A Science, Engineering, or technical degree at NQF Level 7, including one year of Physics and two years of Mathematics.
