Purpose

This programme aims to develop students鈥� practical and theoretical competence in radiation measurement and nuclear experimentation. Students will learn to set up radiation detector systems, including electronics and computer interfaces, to measure various radiation types relevant to nuclear energy production and environmental monitoring. The program emphasizes data collection from laboratory experiments demonstrating physical processes in nuclear power generation. Students are trained to execute mini-research projects using the 6 MV tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at iThemba LABS and to write clear, comprehensive reports. The outcomes ensure students can apply experimental techniques effectively, analyze results, and communicate scientific findings with accuracy and clarity.

Admission Requirements

Applicants require at least a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). A Science, Engineering, or technical degree at NQF Level 7, including one year of Physics and two years of Mathematics.
