Purpose

This programme aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the physical, environmental, and regulatory aspects of nuclear fuel management. Students will examine the challenges in storing, disposing, and processing used nuclear fuel, and assess the environmental impact of uranium and thorium mining, including natural radioactivity, tailings, and waste transport. The program also emphasizes understanding legal and regulatory frameworks governing the nuclear industry, environmental assessments, and safe commissioning and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. By integrating technical knowledge with societal and environmental considerations, students develop critical problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills to responsibly manage nuclear fuel and related radioactive materials.

Admission Requirements

Applicants require at least a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) or Bachelor of Science (BSc). A Science, Engineering, or technical degree at NQF Level 7, including one year of Physics and two years of Mathematics.

Selection Process

Selection is based on academic merit.
