Purpose

This coursework Master鈥檚 Degree assists qualified social workers in advancing their counselling abilities in the field of clinical social work practice. You will acquire these through seven modules, e.g. Contemporary Theories; Complex Behaviour and Environmental Change; Assessment, Intervention and Evaluation; Mental Health; and the Development of the Therapeutic Self. In addition you will apply this knowledge during a one-year internship programme, focused on micro and messo interventions. In your second year, you undertake a research project to demonstrate your research competence. This qualification empowers students to work as private or specialist practitioners in their particular work contexts.

Admission Requirements

An entrance examination is required. A student is admitted to the Master鈥檚 studies after completion of a four-year Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Social Work or a three-year Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Social Work and an Honours Degree in Social Work. A fourth year (honours) average mark of at least 65% is required.

Selection Process

Admission criteria are based on prior academic performance, as well as a selection process (including a writing task and interview). Applicants must have a fourth year or honours degree average of 65% or above, although applications with marks in the low 60s may be considered if additional evidence of academic competence is provided (e.g. examples of publications).
