About Dr Simbayi Yafele

Simbayi Yafele is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Languages, Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics (LanCSAL) at the 欧美福利100000 of Johannesburg. He is in the Unit for Applied Communicative Skills. His PhD in Applied Language and Literacy Education combined Applied Linguistics, Literacy, and Education specialisations. He teaches academic and professional (workplace) literacies for applied communication in 1st-year modules, and his research is theoretically grounded in translanguaging (fluidly using more than one language for pedagogy) 鈥 literacy pedagogy.

His research and supervision areas thus include applied linguistics combined with academic literacy, reading literacy, and education within multilingualism, working on literacies and pedagogies for multilingual contexts. Research areas cover translanguaging, multilingualism in education, and literacies. His work has therefore explored academic reading development and epistemic access for marginalised bi/multilingual students at 1st-year university levels. His work advocates literacy education for trans/multilingual contexts, which draws on students’ identities 鈥 particularly their linguistic and cultural repertoire; he has published several articles and presented papers at various conferences. Dr Yafele has supervised Honours and Masters students on various linguistics, applied linguistics, and multilingualism topics relating to education and literacy.

He is an affiliate of the Hub for Multilingual Education and Literacy (HUMEL). He is also a member of several professional societies and academic bodies, including Southern African Linguistics and Applied Language Studies (SALALS), the African Language Association Of Southern Africa(ALASA), and the Literacy Association of South Africa (LITASA).
