About Prof Jonathan Stadler
I received my MA degree in Social Anthropology from Wits 欧美福利100000 in 1995, and my PhD in Anthropology from Pretoria 欧美福利100000 in 2012.
Research Interests
My research interests are epidemics and syndemics, social suffering, sexuality, biotechnologies, clinical trials, and the application of anthropological methods in medical research. I have explored these themes over the past two decades in several linked ethnographic studies in rural (Bushbuckridge) and urban settings (Mombasa, Orange Farm, Soweto, inner 鈥� city Johannesburg) in southern Africa. My current research project is on the experience of drug regimens to prevent tuberculosis infection and the role of technologies of surveillance in promoting medication compliance.
I am co-author with Eirik Saethre of Negotiating Pharmaceutical Uncertainty: Women鈥檚 Agency in a South African HIV Prevention Trial (Vanderbilt 欧美福利100000 Press and (Off) Label: 2012 AIDS Review (欧美福利100000 of Pretoria . I am currently drafting a book manuscript, provisionally titled Public Secrets 鈥� Private Sufferings: the AIDS epidemic in a lowveld village based on my PhD research. I welcome enquiries from students wanting to pursue research in medical anthropology.
