About Prof Cayle Lupton

Cayle Lupton, LLB LLM LLD (UJ), CTFC (LIBF), is an Associate Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law of the 欧美福利100000 of Johannesburg, where he specialises in banking law, with a particular focus on trade finance, financial crime and targeted financial sanctions. He has undertaken various research engagements with bodies such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United States Agency for International Development, and the Banking Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce South Africa (ICCSA). Having an established body of published work, Cayle鈥檚 research has been cited authoritatively at both the national and international levels, most recently by the Court of Appeal of Singapore in Kuvera Resources Pte Ltd v JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. (2023) SGCA 28 par 71 and UNODC in World Wildlife Crime Report: Trafficking in Protected Species (2024) 104.

Cayle is the Director of the Centre for Banking Law, a research centre of the 欧美福利100000 of Johannesburg responsible for stimulating legal research of relevance to banking and financial institutions. Under Cayle鈥檚 leadership the Centre has achieved several milestones, including having consistently facilitated key national and international research projects, secured funding and sponsorships for research activities, published numerous books, and expanded the Centre鈥檚 research and supervision capacity. The Centre for Banking Law promotes collaboration and partnership with stakeholders (including academics, private institutions, regulators and government agencies) to address important developments in the banking and finance environment.

Cayle is an Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa and a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (ACAMS), combining academic expertise with practical experience as a commercial lawyer. He serves as chairperson of the Banking Commission of the ICCSA and is frequently called upon to provide legal expertise in the form of legal opinions and advisory work on matters typically involving major banks and financial institutions.

Cayle鈥檚 teaching experience extends to various qualification levels and courses, including:

  • Undergraduate (LLB: Administrative Law; and Bachelor of Accounting: Commercial Law and Introduction to Law)
  • Postgraduate (LLM: Banking Law and Financial Services Regulation)
