About Dr. Andile Mayekiso
Andile is a lecturer at the 欧美福利100000 of Johannesburg in the department of Anthropology and Development Studies. He holds a doctoral degree in Social Anthropology obtained from the 欧美福利100000 of Cape Town. His thesis:听鈥楿kuba yindoda kwelixesha鈥听(鈥楾o be a man in these times鈥): Fatherhood, marginality and forms of life among young men in Gugulethu, Cape Town. His thesis examines how young, marginalised men in Gugulethu, a poor township in Cape Town, formulate their conceptions of fatherhood and fathering, and understand their roles and involvement with their children.
In May 2023 I was appointed by the Premier of Gauteng to serve as a technical expert on Gauteng Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims. My role was to help the commission by conducting research, designing of interview guides for public hearings, conduct public hearings and report writing. The commission was chaired by Professor Mziwoxolo Sirayi. This has sine led to a new interest to research the role of traditional leadership post 1994 in South Africa.
Before joining UJ, Andile worked as a project manager for a very large cohort study of an intervention in neighbourhoods of Khayelitsha and Mfuleni townships in Cape Town. This large, randomized control trial focused on HIV & drug abuse prevention for South African men. He worked closely with researchers from the 欧美福利100000 of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
In 2008, he joined the Children鈥檚 Institute of UCT as a researcher to conduct ethnographic fieldwork of infants鈥 born to HIV-positive mothers in Gugulethu Township.
