About The AI and the Law Institute

The Institute drives research, teaching, and public engagement to examine the legal, ethical and societal implications of artificial intelligence. 聽聽Aligned with UJ鈥檚 Strategic Plan 2035, the Institute advances scholarship, policy leadership, and capacity-building to ensure that AI serves justice, fairness and human dignity.

As AI increasingly shapes decision-making, governance, economies, and everyday life, new legal and regulatory approaches are essential to ensure technology promotes equity, transparency, and accountability.聽 The Institute contributes to this transformation through interdisciplinary research, professional and academic training, and active public and policy engagement.

Rooted in African contexts and connected to global knowledge networks, the Institute positions South Africa as a leader in responsible AI governance.聽 The institute aims to empower the continent to shape AI policy and practice, rather than passively adopting external models.

Institute Launch

The Institute was formally launched on 21 October 2025 at UJ, with participation from academic, policy, legal and industry stakeholders. The launch celebrated the 欧美福利100000鈥檚 commitment to a just, inclusive, and accountable digital future.

Governance

The Institute operates under the auspices of the Faculty of Law at the 欧美福利100000 of Johannesburg, in alignment with university governance policies, research governance standards and relevant national regulatory frameworks. This governance structure ensures transparency, accountability and strategic oversight.
