Student Assistants 2024

Ms Phatutshedzo Nemakonde

I obtained my BA Psychology and BA Hons in Industrial Sociology here at UJ. I am currently pursuing an MA in Industrial Sociology degree. I am a very dedicated student, and my research interests are in the experiences of female students’ transitions into university. I believe that the opportunity of working as a student assistant will help me to gain experience to enhance my CV, and also be open to learning more things as this is a diversified environment. The quote that keeps me going is by Eleanor Roosevelt, which says “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.鈥

Ms Sibonokuhle Phakathi

I am a 欧美福利100000 of Johannesburg Alumni, as I have obtained a BA degree at the university, majoring in Psychology and Sociology. I have returned to the institution to complete my postgraduate studies in BA Honours in Sociology. With a zeal for learning and growth, I am simultaneously a Student Assistant in the Department of Sociology and an intern at the Centre for Sociology Research and Practice (CSRP). I will briefly share how I had not put much thought into taking up Sociology as a career until the department decided to host a Third Year Top Achievers’ High Tea where the various lecturers shared their paths within the field during my final year (undergrad). I also decided to delve deeper into finding out more about the opportunities Sociology would afford me after my studies and I was amazed to say the least. My findings, in alignment with my interests, persuaded me into choosing to further my postgraduate studies in this field and I have no regrets. I look forward to making a positively lasting impact on those I interact with and the world around them and I hope to learn from them too. One of the quotes I draw inspiration from is one of Virginia Rometty鈥檚 and it states 鈥淚 learned to always take on things I鈥檇 never done before. Growth and comfort do not coexist.鈥澛犅營 remain hopeful that there is an exciting future to look forward to.

Mr Teddy Ratladi

I obtained my BA and Honours in Sociology here at the 欧美福利100000 of Johannesburg. I am currently pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in industrial Sociology. I am passionate about how work is changing overtime that’s why I chose Industrial Sociology. I am an expert in social research since I have used both methodologies in my studies. My research in honours was based on active citizenship where i had to look at the student’s likelihood to participating in protests. Working in this department as a student assistant will open doors for me as I will be gaining work聽experience and skills. I believe my contribution to this department will be beneficial for students.

Mr Tshepo Sepatake

Tshepo Sepatake is a UJ graduate and a student who holds a BA degree, with a double major in Sociology and Psychology. He鈥檚 currently pursuing an Honours degree in Sociology. He is a recipient of an Annual Prize-Giving Award in the Department of Sociology for the 3rd Year Research Programme. This has allowed him to engage in research on Migration, focusing on the perceptions and experiences on work of migrants from Tzaneen. He has also appeared in the UJ Faculty of Humanities Dean鈥檚 List Awards during his 1st and 2nd Year of Undergraduate Studies. His passion has always been wanting to voice out the opinions of those who come from the dusty rural areas. Hence, his undergraduate research focused on rural-urban migration. He believes that working as a Student Assistant can help him gain experience and skills as well as being the voice of students within the department.
