Strategic Focus Areas

The Centre鈥檚 Strategic Focus Areas

The Centre for the Study of Race, Gender and Class advances critical scholarship, policy engagement, and community-oriented initiatives that address some of the most pressing socio-economic and political challenges of our time. Through interdisciplinary research and strategic partnerships, the Centre focuses on four key thematic areas that guide its academic work, public engagement, and development-oriented projects.

  1. Economic Disparity, Climate and Gender Justice

The Centre examines the interconnected nature of economic inequality, climate change, and gender-based vulnerabilities. Research and policy engagement within this focus area aim to promote equitable economic participation, climate justice, and gender-responsive governance, particularly for communities disproportionately affected by environmental and economic transitions.

  1. Politics, Class and Racialised Identity Formation

This thematic area investigates how political structures, historical legacies, and socio-economic inequalities shape class dynamics, racial identities, and power relations. The Centre critically explores issues of democracy, transformation, and social cohesion in order to deepen understanding of the continuing impact of race, class, and identity in shaping contemporary political and social realities.

  1. Social Policy and Mobility

The Centre conducts research on public policy, social welfare systems, education, and labour markets to better understand the mechanisms that influence social mobility and development. This work seeks to contribute to the design of inclusive policies that reduce structural inequalities and expand opportunities for marginalized communities.

  1. Innovation and Technology

Recognising the transformative potential of technological advancement, the Centre explores the role of digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies in shaping governance, economic development, and social transformation. Particular attention is given to the ethical implications and opportunities that technological change presents for African societies.
