How the ERR is Compiled and Maintained
The Gauteng Environmental Research Register (ERR) is a curated, policy-relevant database of environmental research focused on Gauteng Province. It was initiated in the 2017/18 financial year by the Environmental Policy, Planning and Coordination Directorate of the Gauteng Department of Environment to respond to the need to have a reporting tool on environmental research in the Province. Today it forms part of ongoing collaboration under a formal agreement between GDEnv and UJ, ensuring platform stability and academic integrity. It is compiled and maintained through a structured process that ensures credibility, transparency, and strategic value.
Data Collection
Studies are sourced from academic institutions, government departments, NGOs, private sector entities, and international organizations. Research is selected based on relevance to Gauteng鈥檚 environmental priorities and alignment with national standards, including parameters set by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). Systematic search methods drawing on online databases and institutional repositories, followed by manual reviews aim to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Quality Assurance
All entries undergo rigorous screening for relevance, methodological integrity, and policy applicability. In 2022, UJ led a peer review process that resulted in the exclusion of over 50 studies that did not meet the required standards. Quality checks are ongoing and include coder training, inter-reviewer validation, and periodic audits.
Data Management & Access
Each study is tagged with metadata including author, institution, publication year, SDG alignment, and policy relevance. A new 鈥淔ield of Study / Benefactor鈥 column helps identify the target audience for each study. The ERR is hosted on the UJ PEETS website, ensuring public access and promoting collaboration.鈥
Integration & Use
The ERR contributes to national initiatives such as the South African Environmental Evidence Map and supports reporting to the National Climate Change Database. Studies are classified by their influence across the policy cycle鈥攄iagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation鈥攎aking the register a strategic tool for governance. It has been presented at the Gauteng Environmental Research Symposium and other stakeholder forums. The first ERR report was compiled in March 2019; and subsequent reports have been approved annually. 鈥
