Short Learning Programmes

In line with its education and training mandate, SMaCT develops specialised short learning programmes (SLPs) and certifications to build capacity in the Built Environment sector.

The centre currently runs the following Short Learning Program(s):

Building Inspector SLP

Programme听overview听

The purpose of the building inspector qualification is to equip learners with the necessary skills to听operate听as advanced Building Inspectors. This will allow them to be able to manage, review, and approve building plans while ensuring compliance with the National Building Regulations, SANS codes of practice, and other relevant legislation. Building Inspectors will develop the听expertise听to process applications, conduct construction inspections, assess existing buildings, and enforce regulatory, safety, and structural standards.

Graduates will gain skills in advising on building requirements, managing records and reports, and overseeing compliance monitoring. They will听demonstrate听critical attributes such as听strong communication, analytical thinking, attention to detail, ethical decision-making, leadership, and effective report writing.听These skills will听assist听in听contributing to the safety and quality of the built environment.

Minimum entry requirements

The minimum entry requirements for this听Programme听is听an NQF Level 6 or equivalent tertiary qualification听attained听from a recognized institution of higher learning in the following disciplines:

  • Building Science听

Course duration听

  • Modules are offered once a week for six months
  • Upon completion of the six months contact learning, students are expected to complete six months of site work experiential learning (applicable to unemployed graduates)

Online and Physical classes听are held听at Doornfontein Campus.听

Admission:听

  • Applications for the BI SLP are open throughout the year.听
  • Admission & registration takes place in the first and second semester听
