This project is funded and commissioned by the Council for Higher Education (CHE) to analyse
institutional self-evaluation reports and conduct focus groups across various Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
in South Africa. The purpose of the project is to deepen our understanding of how curriculum transformation is
being approached, interpreted, and implemented within the sector. The project aims to:

  • Identify and describe the concepts and terms used to represent the processes of curriculum transformation
in South African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
  • Examine how HEIs in South Africa conceptualize curriculum transformation, including their understanding,
perspectives, and approaches to this process.
  • Investigate the drivers of curriculum transformation in South African HEIs, including the individuals,
groups, organizations, and factors that influence and initiate these processes.
  • Explore whether strategies aimed at decolonizing the university curriculum are used interchangeably with
processes of curriculum transformation in South African HEIs.
  • Analyse the factors that either promote or impede curriculum transformation in South African HEIs,
including identifying the facilitators and barriers to this process.
