About Us

The Department of Visual Art is one of South Africa鈥檚 oldest art schools, with a proud history that dates back to 1926. Established originally as the School of Arts and Crafts, the Department has played a significant role in shaping visual arts education in the country for nearly a century. Over the years, it has been home to influential artists, educators, and scholars, and has produced graduates who have made meaningful contributions locally and internationally.

The Department鈥檚 history reflects both growth and adaptability, having occupied several locations across Johannesburg before finding its current home on the Bunting Road Campus in Auckland Park. Throughout its development, the Department evolved in name and structure in response to shifts in the visual arts landscape, ultimately adopting the title Department of Visual Art to better reflect the dynamic and contemporary nature of the discipline.

Since becoming part of the 欧美福利100000 of Johannesburg in 2005, the Department has continued to strengthen its academic offering and reputation. It now operates within the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture and is housed in a purpose built facility that supports creative practice, critical inquiry, and research.

Today, the Department offers the Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art, along with dedicated Honours, Masters, and doctoral pathways. These programmes are grounded in rigorous studio practice, theoretical engagement, and contextual relevance, preparing students for meaningful participation in the visual arts sector. Guided by a legacy of excellence and innovation, the Department remains committed to nurturing creative thinkers who engage critically with the world through visual practice.
